You have heard of Birmingham, AL but do you KNOW Birmingham, AL? Come spend a summer exploring how history has impacted our present and how our energies and passions will move our present into an incredible future. Interns in Birmingham will work with churches in urban communities working with children, seniors and gardens. In addition to serving ministries in hands on direct service we will share field trips to Civil Rights sites and reflect on how these events shaped some of the struggles of today. The pastors and congregations will engage with you and tell stories over amazing food, intense card games and thoughtful conversation as you learn more about ministering with the poor. We are a city of layers- layers of people, faith and history. Come spend a summer serving, learning, listening and doing. Here’s a bit more about our two mission sites…
East Lake United Methodist Church and P.E.E.R., Inc. are located in the South East Lake neighborhood. South East Lake is a diverse, low-income neighborhood in the eastern area of Birmingham, Alabama. East Lake United Methodist Church has been an active congregation in South East Lake for over 125 years. Our call within the community is to be "in the neighborhood for good!" P.E.E.R., Inc. is a 501c3 connected to the church that aims to empower its community for healthy living, learning, and working including a youth summer feeding program, educational community garden, Bible studies with neighborhood youth, and a Saturday farmer’s market.
Restoration UMC Mission located in the western section of Birmingham, has engaged in ministry with the poor for twenty-nine years. Under the umbrella of the mission are multiple ministries, such as: Dream Garden, Inc., an out of school time outreach to children and youth of the community; The Bread of Life Food Ministry is a ministry that distributes groceries each week on a first come, first serve basis. Dream Garden is the highlight for Restoration during summer and this is a great opportunity for interns to connect with the young people and the neighborhood.
