Sable Learning Center will be a worksite under Anniston site even though it is in a small city called Hobson. Hobson city was Alabama’s first self-governed all black municipality. As of 2016 the population was 761. It is under the Anniston-Oxford statistical area.
New Life United Methodist Church
New Life United Methodist Church is a rebirth of Glen Addie Community Church (mission). Glen Addie was conceptualized in the mid 60's by a group of volunteers from First United Methodist Church in downtown Anniston. They began a ministry in the Glen Addie public housing helping elementary and junior high age children with their schoolwork.
The Glen Addie community has tremendous needs. The immediate needs of this community were, and still are in the areas of nutrition, substance abuse, childcare, parenthood, literacy medical, and education. Most importantly though, the mission has labored to share God's unconditional love and acceptance and assist in finding hope in the midst of crisis and hopelessness.
The vision is that New Life United Methodist Church be a place of Hope and Transformation: a place where everyone will feel the love of God, find the joy of Christ, and experience the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. We will continue to partner with other churches in feeding the hungry as we provide lunch for the community on Saturdays at noon where we are feeding over one hundred people.
You and the other interns will engage in the church’s new summer kids camp and summer feeding program that the church will be providing. They will also be involved in community outreach, weekly community meals, and monthly groceries.
Community Enabler – Sable Learning Center
The Community Enabler Mission is: Enabling the community to become sensitized to the needs of the poor and to participate in public and private advocacy for the disadvantaged. Developing ministries that will meet the needs of the disadvantaged. Meeting the unmet needs of the citizens of Calhoun County.
The primary purpose of The Sable Learning Center is: Redirecting the lives of children/youth in the hope of guiding and helping them develop self-awareness and the courage to help themselves through anger management, reading skills, life skills, computer training, and health care education. Although parents can give donations for the services provided, the center is free for children of all ages. Many of the Sable Center’s youth come from low-income homes. In the summertime, the children are fed breakfast, lunch and snacks throughout the day.
