Reading, PA has a population of 88,082, and is a small urban city located in beautiful Berks County. It is truly a wonderful, multicultural city, but according to the 2010 census, Reading has the highest share of citizens living in poverty in the nation. In 1733, the site of present day Reading was chosen. It was set at the intersection of two great valleys, the east Penn-Lebanon Valley and the Schuylkill River. In 1748, the town was laid out by Thomas and Richard Penn, the sons of William Penn. The name was chosen after Penn's own county seat, Reading, in Berkshire, England. In 1752, Reading became the county seat of Berks. Agriculture is an important industry in Berks County...the largest and finest farms are in the southern part of the county. Today, Reading is a city pulsating with industrial life. It is also well equipped with agencies that represent civilization at its best-churches, hospitals, clubs, fraternal societies, recreational centers, schools and colleges, a historical society, an art institute as well as a daily newspaper. Reading claims the distinction of a symphony orchestra, two choral societies, a chamber musical ensemble, a civic opera company and many other excellent music groups that have contributed to the city's prestige as a center of art and culture.
Our interns will be housed in the center of this city in a separate house own by a couple, members of North Star UMC. The house is located in the historic site of the city, South 5th Street.
Our QuadW Missional Interns will work primarily at the following sites:
· West Lawn UMC, a wonderful English-speaking church serving a diverse community in the suburbs. We will support their one week Christian VBS which serve more than 200+ neighborhood children.
· Ashes to Beauty Women Outreach Ministry: We will build relationships with women who are victims of domestic violence. We will support them through Bible study, Coffee of Hope ministry (a ministry of love & compassion) and time of worship.
· City Light Ministries: Founded in 1992, CLM is an urban faith-based ministry with an emphasis on youth and the homeless. Our QuadW Missional Interns will be in charge of running their summer children's program. Also, the team will spend together some overnight sleeping at the CLM Homeless House, helping serve meals to the homeless.
Lastly, we will form lasting relationships with each other and all those we serve, and best of all, we will learn a lot about our Lord as we together work on our relationship with Him and watch Him at work here in Reading!
